What are the 5 basic elements of landscape design?

The 5 basic elements of landscape design are: Color, Texture, Movement, Dimension, and Proportion.

  • Color: Colors utilized can make or break a landscape design, and there is much to consider. Evergreens to provide color year-round, perhaps some foliage that turns in the fall, etc.
  • Texture: Different textures can make your landscape design more engaging. Perhaps you’re utilizing rocks in a hardscape that are smooth, you could utilize trees with bark that are bit more rigid, little things like that can go a long way.
  • Movement: Paths or walkways, water features, fire pits, and more can help control the movement and flow of your design.
  • Dimension: Giving depth to your landscaping can help enhance look, and deliver balance.
  • Proportion: Utilize different heights with plants, trees, and other features that complement the home appropriately
